Americans with Disabilities Act

(Prohibits employment discrimination against qualified individuals with disabilities; Requires reasonable accommodation to meet the needs of disabled job applicants and employees)


Civil Rights Act of 1991

(Revises earlier law. Addresses employer's burden in defending against disparate impact claim, and limits allowance of compensatory and punitive damage claims)

(Provides employee whistleblower protection)


Consumer Credit Protection Act

(Prohibits discharge due to wage garnishment related to a single instance of indebtedness)


Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993

(Provides for unpaid leave for employees to attend to their own medical needs, for the birth, adoption of foster placement of a child, or to care for certain family members with medical problems)


Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974

(Prohibits discharge for exercising rights secured by the Act, or to prevent an employee from obtaining benefits under a plan covered by the Act)


Fair Labor Standards Act

(Prohibits discharge for exercising rights secured by the Act's wage and hour standards)


National Labor Relations Act

(Prohibits discharge on account of union membership or other protected activities)


Occupational Safety and Health Act

(Prohibits discharge on account of employee's refusal to work in unsafe workplace or for exercising rights guaranteed by the Act)


Older Workers Benefit Protection Act of 1990

(Sets standards for validity of employee releases of claims under the ADEA)


Pregnancy Discrimination Act

(Prohibits discharge because of pregnancy, childbirth or related medical conditions)


Protection for Jury Service

(Discharge of any permanent employee for serving on a federal jury is prohibited)


Title VII of Civil Rights Act of 1964

(Prohibits discrimination because of race, sex, color, religion or national origin)


Vietnam Era Veterans' Readjustment Assistance Act

(Prohibits employer for discharging without good cause a reemployed veteran within one year of employment)


Water Pollution Control Act

(Prohibits employer from terminating employee who exercised rights under the Act that addressed the employer's compliance)


Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act

(Requires employers with 100 or more employees to give 60 days' notice before laying off or terminating 50 or more employees)
